ABOUT US

History

Biomechanical Consultants, Inc is a technical consulting and forensic engineering firm that specializes in injury biomechanics. We are currently based in California with offices in California, Nevada, and Oregon.  Our team's legacy began in 2000 with solving our clients' biomechanial questions. Today, we continue to broaden our capabilities and specialties by introducing new experts, engineers, and scientists to our multidisciplinary team.

President

Dr. Shimada earned his Bachelors of Science (BS) degree from the College of Letters & Science with an emphasis in biomechanics from the University of California, Davis in 1992. He continued his education at California State University, Sacramento where he earned a Master of Science (MS) from the School of Health and Human Services in 1994. His emphasis at CSU, Sacramento was in the field of exercise physiology and biomechanics. He further earned a doctorate (Ph.D.) from the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences from the University of Pittsburgh in 1998, and a second MS degree in Bioengineering from the university in 2000. Both of Dr. Shimada’s degrees from the University of Pittsburgh were in the area of biomechanics. Currently he is the President of Biomechanical Consultants, a forensic biomechanics and engineering firm based in California, Nevada, and Oregon. He was formerly employed at the California State University, Sacramento in the Department of Kinesiology, as an instructor and Director of the Biomechanics Laboratory. Currently, Dr. Shimada is an instructor at Northwestern University at the Center for Public Safety.  There he teaches "Injury Biomechanics and Traffic Crash Reconstruction".  His primary area of consulting and research is focused on identifying, determining the likelihood, and prevention of brain and spinal cord injuries.

Dr. Shimada has authored over 70 peer-reviewed journal, conference proceedings, and abstracts in the field of biomechanics, medical, and engineering . He has presented and conducted several research studies at meetings and conferences such as the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine, International Society of Biomechanics, American Society of Biomechanics, and Biomedical Engineering Society.  Dr. Shimada had testified over 200 times in superior courts throughout California and Oregon during the past 25 years.

Kevin Adanty, Ph.D.

Forensic Biomechanist

Kevin Adanty, Ph.D., has a comprehensive background in both science and engineering. His academic journey includes a Bachelor of Science in human kinetics (Kinesiology) from the University of Ottawa in 2016 and a Master of Science in human kinetics in 2018, where he specialized in brain injury biomechanics in sports including cycling, equestrian, American football, and ice hockey. In 2023, Dr. Adanty earned his doctorate in mechanical engineering from the University of Alberta, shifting his focus to tissue biomechanics. Notably, he characterized the mechanics of the human calvarium (neurocranium) and designed a preliminary surrogate model intended for mimicking a skull fracture when testing helmets.

As a graduate student, Dr. Adanty excelled as a teaching assistant in various science and engineering disciplines, including musculoskeletal anatomy, exercise physiology, motor control, biomechanics, advanced strength of materials, and mechanical engineering experimentation. His expertise has also extended to guest lecturing experience on injury and tissue biomechanics.

Since 2017, Dr. Adanty has authored 20+ peer-reviewed manuscripts and conference proceedings in biomechanics, has presented globally at conferences on injury biomechanics, and actively reviews manuscripts for prestigious journals. In 2023, he joined Biomechanical Consultants, Inc., and has provided consulting and expert witness services in injury biomechanics for civil and criminal cases at federal and state levels. Dr. Adanty has been retained by both plaintiff and defense, testified, consulted for trial counsel in court, and has experience preparing federal reports.
